Leicester hockey Club sponsored by The Art of Building ran out comfortable winners against local rivals Ashby. The home team won 3-1. The first twenty minutes was dominated by Leicester, with most of the play inside the Ashby 25 yd line. Leicester produced some nice attacking play and both Adam Goodman and Mark Stokes had chances. Leicester Continued to press and won a short corner when Jon Williams was fouled in the ‘d’. Ian Bartlett struck the ball well to beat the keeper and put Leicester 1-0 up.

In the second half Leicester continued to dominate and again the forwards had chances. Midway into the half, Jon Williams linked up well with Adam Goodman and Goodman crossed the ball for Mark Stokes who finished well on his reverse stick to put Leicester 2-0 up. Ashby came back and had a couple of good chances, but Leicester keeper George Wake made some good saves. Moments later, Ashby gave the ball away and Matt Kinal picked it up in midfield, he played a one two with Mark Stokes who slotted the ball under the keeper to put Leicester 3-0. In the dying minutes of the game Ashby pressed forward and converted a short corner with a well struck shot to get a consolation goal.

A good away performance meant Leicester earned their first back to back wins of the season. It was GEC who started the far better of the two teams and created a number of half chances in the first ten minutes. After this Leicester organised themselves and began to play some decent hockey. Mark Stokes and Dave turner linked up well in the ‘d’ to win a short corner. Ian Bartlett struck his first shot well, the ball bounced up again and Ian was able to volley the ball back under the keeper to put Leicester 1 up. A few minutes later Leicester attacked again and when Ady Popes miss-hit shot fell to Dave Turner he managed to lift the ball into the top left hand corner of the goal for Leicester’s second. Later in the half chances fell to Mark Stokes and Jon Williams.

In the second half Leicester dominated but were not clinical enough in the ‘d’. Mark Stokes, Adam Goodman and Dave Turner all had chances. GEC were only able to manage a handful of attacks on the break. In the dying minutes of the game, the GEC attacker broke free and was deemed to be fouled as he was taking a shot. A Penalty flick was awarded. George Wake was unable to save the well struck flick and GEC earned themselves a conciliation goal. The game ended moments later.

Leicester’s under 15 team also had an emphatic victory in the first round to the HA youth cup with a 12-0 win away at Derwent.

Before the start of play both teams were level on points and joint third in the league. For the first ten minutes it was a close game, with neither team giving much away. Leicester then pressed forward and began creating chances and winning hits around the ‘d’. When Dave Cotterill crossed the ball from the left, Jon Williams failed to control the ball and Ian Bartlett stole in behind him to finish at the far post. Leicester continued to press and earned themselves a short corner. Ian Bartlett slipped the ball back to Jon Williams who slotted the ball under the keeper for Leicester’s second. Leicester had further short corners in the first half but failed to convert.

In the second half there were limited chances for both teams, until the last ten minutes. Nuneaton pressed forward and could have scored when the ball was laid back to their attacker on the flick spot. Instead of slapping the ball home, it hit his foot and Leicester were awarded the hit. With five minutes to go Mark Stokes could have sealed the win for Leicester when he rounded the keeper, only to put the ball wide of an empty goal. It finished 2-0 to Leicester.
